Sheffield for Democracy continues the fight for reform

Campaigning for a more representative democracy

“Sheffield for Democracy” is an informal group set up by local campaigners, many of whom were involved in the “Yes” Campaign in the May 2011 referendum. It is linked to national organisations such as the Electoral Reform Society  and Unlock Democracy. These campaign for greater democracy, an informed populace, citizens rights, a fairer voting system and more accurate representation of the public will in Parliament.

If you are interested in helping to fulfil these aims please visit the Sheffield for Democracy website or their group on Facebook.

Thank you to all our volunteers

I hope everyone is having a rest and recuperation day after yesterday’s efforts. You have certainly deserved it!

Many, many thanks to all of you who played a part in the Campaign here in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. So many people did their bit, and lots of people did very big “bits”. All were important and all helped to sustain the energy and enthusiasm. Particular thanks to Emily and Arran, our organisers, backed up by Jane Thomas for the Region, and thanks are also due to Richard Shaw who updated our website so regularly. And to you all.

It has been so encouraging to see a new generation being active, as well as, maybe more disappointingly, learning about how politics is currently “played” in our country.

Many of the pundits are talking about a lack of enthusiasm for change. I find that contradicts my own experience of working with you all. Never a dull moment, and lots of humour and good fun!

So on behaf of the Steering Group, please accept our congratulations for a job well done.

Regards

Vicky Seddon

Update

On Sunday 8th May the volunteers of Sheffield Says Yes came together for a Wake for the campaign and to commiserate each other that, after a hard fought campaign, progress in improving Britain’s democracy has not been made. However, what we do have to celebrate is the magnificent effort put in by so many people locally, and their enthusiasm and commitment. Particularly impressive has been the input of young people, which has been such an important part of the campaign. Maybe the legacy of this campaign will be to stir up greater enthusiasm for reform amongst a new generation of activists.

It is testament perhaps to their enthusiasm and commitment that the Sheffield result was clearly better than the result overall:

Sheffield

  • 61,141 Yes 38.28% Yes
  • 98,563 No 61.72% No

Overall Final

  • 6,152,607 Yes Total votes ‘Yes’: 32.10%
  • 13,013,123 No Total votes ‘No’: 67.90%

We end this post with a picture from the End of Campaign party of two of our stalwart volunteers, Arran and Emily – whose mother had kindly baked us a cake…

Sheffield says Yes! goes leafleting with Paul Blomfield MP

image

Paul Blomfield MP with our volunteers on the steps of Sheffield Town Hall

Sheffield says Yes! was out in force today to bring the case for a Yes vote in this Thursday’s referendum to more people in Sheffield. We started at Devonshire Green and moved onto the Continental Market on Fargate near the town hall. We were joined by the Labour MP for Sheffield Central, Paul Blomfield MP who joined us in giving out hundreds of leaflets to shoppers. After a while we then visited the Sheffield Botanical Gardens where we handed out flyers and window posters to people enjoying the wonderful weather and scenic surroundings. After a couple of hours we then headed back to the office where our phonebank volunteers are calling residents to encourage them to vote Yes this week. To date we have called over eleven thousand people in Sheffield – a fantastic achievement by our wonderful volunteers.

Sheffield says Yes! to Fairer Votes will be out canvassing and leafleting right up to polling day. If you would like to help, even if just for an hour, please get in touch.

FPTP gives you coffee when 70% of you wanted beer

First Past The Post is a great system for deciding between two options, however as historian Dan Snow explains, the problems with it start when there are more than two options…

Some clever person has made an (unofficial) Yes! to Fairer Votes poster based on the video above – AV vs FPTP at a glance:

Coffee beats beer because the majority who want beer is split about which pub to go to. AV allows them to agree on which pub to go to.

If AV is good enough for MPs it’s good enough for us

Sheffield says Yes! to Fairer Votes

Sheffield says Yes! to Fairer Votes

The No campaign like to make out that the Alternative Vote (AV) is an unpopular, somehow alien and “unBritish” (according to Lord Reid) electoral system. But let’s look at what First Past The Post (FPTP) and AV (and similar preferential/run-off systems such as SV) are used for…

FPTP

  • Election of MPs to the House of Commons
  • Election of English Councillors

AV

  • By-elections of Hereditary Peers in the House of Lords use AV to fill vacant seat when a Peer dies.
  • By-elections for the Northern Ireland Assembly
  • Election of leaders of the Labour (AV), Lib Dem (AV) & Conservative parties (who use a multi-round run-off which produces the same outcome as AV)
  • Selection of parliamentary candidates for Labour, Lib Dems and the Conservatives. In fact Charlotte Vere, the Finance Director for NOtoAV, was selected as the Conservative Brighton Pavilion candidate using AV.
  • In 2006 the selection of Conservative London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson was done by AV.
  • The elections of 11 elected mayors in English cities and towns, including those of London, Doncaster and Leicester use a variant of AV called the Supplementary Vote (SV) where you express up to two preferences.
  • The Election of the Commons Speaker and Lord Speaker is done using a multi-ballot run-off and AV respectively.
  • The selection of committee chairs is done by AV with members of select committees chosen by STV (basically AV for multi-member constituencies where everyone above a threshold is elected)

Is there any greater example of one rule/system for MPs and one for the rest of us? It’s clear that our elected representatives and unelected Lords think FPTP isn’t suitable for them to use but that it’s fine for us common folk to use it to choose them.

If FPTP isn’t good enough for electing Lords, Mayors or selecting parliamentary candidates then it isn’t good enough for us to elect MPs. End one rule for them and one for us and say Yes! on May 5th.

Sheffield Yes! To Fairer Votes Day of Action – 5th May 2011

Sheffield says Yes! volunteers outside Sheffield Station

A national referendum will be held on the 5th May 2011, in which the country will be given a choice between keeping the outdated First Past the Post system or adopting the fairer Alternative Vote.

We’ve got our chance in the referendum to build on the strengths of the current electoral system while eliminating many of its weaknesses. Politicians will be forced to work harder to earn and keep our support.

Activists across the country have been campaigning tirelessly for electoral reform, and on the 5th of May, you can be part of this historic campaign.

The Sheffield branch of ‘Yes! To Fairer Votes’ are hosting a day of action on the day of the referendum, in which activists and volunteers will work towards getting out the ‘Yes’ vote across the city. This is of vital importance, and could mean the difference between winning and losing.

If you would like to get involved on the 5th of May, even if you are only available for a short amount of time, come along to 83 Wilkinson Street any time between 6:30am – 10:00pm on the day (map provided on the link below); or contact sheffieldyestofairervotes@gmail.com leaving your contact details. Any help prior to this would also be greatly appreciated.

This referendum is our one chance to change politics. Together, we can really make a difference.

Why people in Sheffield should support AV

With less than 2 weeks to go until the referendum you may be wondering “Why should I care about which system we use? What will AV mean for me or my community?” Well with the aid of last year’s General Election results from BBC Democracy Live website, the Voter Power Index website and some pie charts I’m going to try to illustrate the main benefits of the Alternative Vote system over the current First Past The Post system.

More people in Sheffield voted for someone other than their current MP than for them

The graphs below illustrate the share of the vote for each Sheffield constituency. The “Needed to win” portion represents the number of votes that candidate needed to win the seat, that number being 1 more than the number of votes the person in 2nd place received. The “Winner’s Excess” portion is the total number of votes the elected candidate received, minus the votes they actually needed to win. This can be thought of as the number of supporters they could lose and still win that seat. Finally, the “Losing Candidates” portion represents the number of votes cast for anyone else.

The graph on the right illustrates this for the city as a whole: More than half the electorate voted for someone else other than the current MPs for Sheffield and overall the current MPs could lose 43% of their combined supporters and still win.

Stepping up the Yes! campaign in Sheffield

Holding our banner on the steps of City Hall

With only two weeks to go until the referendum there are still a lot of people who are undecided about which way to vote.

The polls are very volatile at the moment, with some up, some down. They use different methods: some by phone, some on the internet; some large samples, some small; some random, some targeted to seek a “representative” sample; some weighted towards those most likely to vote. So it is not surprising that there are varying results. The mood of the local campaign is upbeat and where there is a genuine feeling that the volatility means there is all to play for. The only opinion poll that really matters is the one on May 5th. To that end we intend to press on and contact as many people as we can about the referendum and give our positive message for voting Yes!

Last weekend we leafleted in Crookes, Dronfield, and City Centre. We helped colleagues in Barnsley and Rotherham to do the same. We had the Ad Van at the Berkley Precinct and also at Morrisons in Hillsborough. Several of the group’s volunteers leafleted their own streets.

Just one local campaign amongst many

Sheffield says Yes! is just one of many, many regional and local groups campaigning right across the UK. We are a truly grass-roots, cross-party campaign of ordinary people who just want a fairer way of electing our MPs. If you would like to find your local group please visit the Yes! to Fairer Votes local group directory.

Campaigning across South Yorkshire

Why are the BNP supporting No2AV? Because they know AV will hurt them.

Our latest campaign poster which aims to dispel the myth that AV helps extremists. AV only helps those parties that reach out beyond their core followers to the majority of constituents.

This weekend, Sheffield supporters joined colleagues in Rotherham, Dronfield and Barnsley to spread the word. Whilst more people are indicating that they know about the referendum, many are unsure what it means, or how to vote. So we still have a lot of work to do!
